A Blighted Ovum CANNOT Be Diagnosed at only Six Weeks!

Let me just start by saying this:

A blighted ovum should not be diagnosed before nine weeks at the earliest!

I believe this wholeheartedly because at the Misdiagnosed Miscarriage site, many women were told they had a blighted ovum at eight weeks or before and, then, at nine weeks, they found the baby!

Of course, this doesn't happen all the time but, because it does happen, I firmly believe that any doctor who diagnoses a blighted ovum before nine weeks is diagnosed too soon.

Now, that said, this last week alone, two women posted who had turned down D&Cs and found their babies.  Both women were only six weeks along.

Joanne's Story

Sonia's Story

I really believe these doctors were beyond irresponsible.  I understand why a doctor will suggest a D&C after seven weeks.  The ultrasound literature is wrong and indicates that at seven weeks, if a baby is not seen, it is a blighted ovum.  THIS IS WRONG!  Just want to make sure you understand that.  If I had listened to my doctor and had my D&C at seven weeks, my daughter wouldn't be here (and, if I'd listened to my doctor and had it at eight weeks, she wouldn't be here).  We're trying to get the word out there and there are doctors who are listening and finally research coming out showing that seven weeks is too early to diagnose.

That said, though, there is absolutely no excuse for a doctor to diagnose a blighted ovum at six weeks.  Unless there is a serious emergency, there is no reason to have a D&C for a blighted ovum at only six weeks.

If your doctor is diagnosing a blighted ovum at six weeks, you need a new doctor.  These are the doctors that worry me most.  These are the doctors who have very likely misdiagnosed other miscarriages and ended viable pregnancies.

If you are diagnosed with a blighted ovum at six weeks, please, find a new doctor and stay monitored.  If you do end up finding your baby, you might want to consider filing a complaint.  You may save another baby's life.

As always, if you are going through a misdiagnosed scare right now, (((hugs)))

  1. I went in due to heavy spotting at 15 weeks. Technician could not find the fetus for a few minutes, finally found it and said it was only a few millimeters, that I was only at 3 or 4 weeks not 15. When I miscarried 2 days later, 2" long fetus inside sac came out. They'd tried to tell me I'd lost the 1st one and "didn't notice" then must've conceived again more recently. Absolute rubbish. I considered taking photo of it with a tape measure for their technician to see but decided against it. Yes I do have tipped uterus, a previous doc told me that, they never mentioned it.

    1. I am so very sorry for your loss. Generally, a tilted uterus is only a concern in the first trimester. After that, measurements are usually more on target. (((Hugs))) to you.

    2. I am 48 and was told I had high hcg of 7.4 the first blood test and urine test was positive. Two days later another blood test was done and hcg was 14.7. A week later I had an ultrasound and saw slot of scar tissue due to two C-sections. I was told no baby sac or heart beats. I feel nauseous, stomach is hard and have lots of burping. Side pains and lower back mild pain as if my back is expanding. I had a period the month before but test came back positive. Which surprised due to my period coming down the month prior. My significant other has his tubes tied.yes confusion stress and uncertainty at the age of 48. Last urine test it showed a negetive result. However I told my OBGYN my symptoms and she noticed my uterus being tilted. So she ordered blood work tomorrow and another ultrasound....please keep me on your prayers. 48 and pregnant is scary.

  2. Your stories gave me a piece of mind but yet... Hello! I was once had a D&C due to blighted Ovum on 2012 and I again Im worried it will be the same. I had a miscarriage also last Nov 2015, and i was shocked to know that i am pregnant after 4 PT last Jan 24th. On Jan 28th my HCG was 1698 then Jan 30th it was 3640. I should be 7th week now but dr didnt see anything yet. He said the sac was too healthy and he said its too early to see. He asked for another HCG Feb 6 and it came back to 10456. Tomorrow i will have the followup HCG to see more. He gave me an aspirin and cyclogest ... I had 3 miscarriages and 2 beautiful and adorable boys... I Am praying so hard that my HCG will double tomorrow. Tnx

    1. First of all, huge hug for you. I am so sorry you are going through all of this. I'm not sure I am reading your message correct. Your hCG level was at 20 on the 5th and has risen to 10,000? If so, it is going the right direction. Stay monitored and I do hope you get better news soon. Praying for you.
