Stories of Women Who Turned Down a D&C due to Blighted Ovum and Found their Babies!

Today I want to share with you a few very important stories.  Each of these stories can be found on the Misdiagnosed Miscarriage site. While not all of these were found at nine weeks or beyond, you can see that they were diagnosed too early.  As I've said over and over, I love the new guidelines that state a doctor should wait until the gestational sac is 25mm and then wait one week more to verify.  That would put women at about nine or so weeks which would prevent so many misdiagnosed miscarriages!

Amanda's Story
Diagnosed with a blighted ovum and encouraged to have a D&C. When she called to schedule the procedure, they decided on one last ultrasound.
Tera's Story
At eight weeks, there was still no baby to be seen in that sac. Tera went home to wait for a miscarriage that never happened. The next week, they found her baby!
Angie's Story
At about seven and a half weeks, there was still no baby seen and the doctor did not like the slow-rising hCGs so she recommended a D&C. Fortunately, Angie declined and decided to seek a second opinion. One week later, they found that little heartbeat!
Dani's Story
Told she had a blighted ovum at eight weeks, she was encouraged to have the D&C. Two weeks later, Dani had another ultrasound and there was her baby!
Es's Story
Es was diagnosed in the ER at eight weeks and told to have a D&C, thanks to the Misdiagnosed Miscarriage site, she decided to wait two weeks at which time they found the baby with a strong heartbeat.
Sarah's Story
At seven weeks four days, Sarah was told she had a blighted ovum. She decided to wait out the diagnosis rather than have the D&C. At nine weeks four days, they found her baby!
Kelli's Story
At only six weeks, Kelli's doctor was concerned about her higher hCG levels and no baby. She turned dow the D&C. Kelli waited and then sought a second opinion where they found that little heart beating away.
MommyToBe's Story
At ten weeks, they were unable to find her baby. She turned down a medicated miscarriage. A week later, they found her baby.
Sher's Story
At seven weeks, Sher's doctor scheduled a D&C for her. Thanks to the many online stories, she decided to cancel the procedure. Thankfully they found their baby the next week.

  2. Hi Kay,
I just wanted to thank you for your blog and ask a quick question. This blog is such a godsend right now. I am currently 6 weeks 6 days pregnant and had my first ultrasound at 6 weeks 3 days. They saw a gestational sac (16 mm) and the doctor said what might be a very small yolk sac (2mm or less). She indicated that it could be a BO or a slowly developing fetus. I had the early utlrasound because I had been passing blood clots (not really blood, just clots...all dark blood). I am very nervous for my ultrasound on Monday (7 wks, 1 day). I also have a retroverted (tilted) uterus and I am wondering if this is why things seemed "wrong" or "delayed." I had a transvaginal ultrasound via an experienced RE (my pregnancy is from my second FET cycle, first pregnancy) and my dates are clearly correct. Any thoughts or insights? This is the first website/blog that I felt provided some real hope. Thank you for all that you are doing (research, blogging, etc.) it means a lot.

  3. Did you have your ultrasound today? It's still early. I like the UK's new guidelines of waiting until the sac is 25mm and then waiting one more week to verify. Please, keep me updated. (((hugs)))

  4. What a great venue for women who are going through similar experiences. Pregnancy can be an exciting time, yet scary if you don't know what's going on or in a limbo! We used ovulation sticks to conceive, and my LMP put me 7 weeks 6 days for my first ultrasound. It was the most confusing experience ever. The ultrasound tech showed me a flickering heart and a fetal pole with abdominal ultrasound and I was so excited. Then when she did a transvaginal, she was trying to measure the heart rate but was silent after that and took a bunch of pictures for the radiologist. The radiologist came back saying that it was too early to detect anything,so no fetal pole. So i guess the tech was inexperienced? The second u/s was 2 weeks after, and the ultrasound just showed a gestational sac and yolk sac, no fetal pole. I went to see an obgyn doc the day after, and she saw a fetal pole measuring 6 weeks, no heart beat. although i was excited to see fetal pole, i was bummed out that it was only 6 weeks... according to lmp, i should have been 9 weeks by then... anyway, tomorrow i'm going in for another ultrasound to see if the baby grew and has a heartbeat... should i be hopeful? now a days, i'm sick of all these ultrasounds and just want to know what's going on.....

  5. Hi Kay I went for another u/s yesterday and my sac was measuring right on my 9 weeks but still no baby. But the tech said she seen what seemed to be part of my baby that was breaking down and diagnosed me with a blighted ovum. But I still feel very pregnant all the symptoms and no signs of miscarriage. So instead of a d and c I'm waiting to see if my body will do it on its own.Now thanks to the stories I'm still holding on to hope.

    1. (((hugs))) to you. Would you consider getting a second opinion. Just remember, after about 10 weeks, if this is indeed a miscarriage, often a D&C is needed. Keep us updated.

  6. Hi Kay, thank you for this blog, you are giving hope and educated advice to many of us.

I too have a similar story which I hope will end up ok.

Last week my ob did an early US at what we thought were 5 weeks 6 days. She said there was a yolk but no fetal pole and it was measuring smaller than our dates. She then ordered HCG and progesterone levels. That day I was 23800 and 4 days later over 48000.
I asked if this was normal and she called back late last night telling me that it could still be early but with levels this high she feared a blighted ovum. She advanced my next US to this Friday (tomorrow) which will be a week after the first US.
I am terrified, after already 2 mc I really really don't want to lose hope but it's getting to me.
Reading your site have me that little bit of hope. Thank you.

  7. If there is a yolk sac, this cannot be a blighted ovum. That doesn't mean this can't end in miscarriage but, it is still too early to know and all looks normal so far. I think you need a new doctor.

  8. Thank you, Kay. The doctor did say they have seen it being normal before, but my high levels seemed just high to not see a fetal pole.
Either way I have an US today. I am cautiously hoping for improvement. If we still don't see it today, I will still ask to wait at least another week before deciding anything. After reading your blog, there are too many "exceptions" for us not to have hope. Thank you, this is amazing!

  9. Hi Kay, I went in for an u/s today and they could only see the gestional sac and yolk sac. My last MP was thought to be April 16 so I should be 8w4days. I was told that I would probably miscarriage. They took blood to see where my HCG levels were but they didn't tell me the number and I'm scheduled to go back 2 days later to see if the levels have went up. I'm so scared and all I been doing is crying, thinking that I'm going to lose this pregnancy. I've never had a miscarriage and have 2 other kids.

  10. Hi Kay,
I'd like your thoughts. I do not know my LMP. I had 3 positive hot. Went in 2 days ago they seen a 14mm empty sac hcg was 36,960. Went back today hcg is 44,771. They rescheduled an US for next week. I'm cautiously optimistic as the hcg went up but my dr. Doesn't seem very optimistic because it didn't double. I'm just terrified I've been ttc for almost 10 years I want this baby so very badly :(

  15. I as well have been told I have a blighted Ovum...LMP was 01/14/2017 that would put me at 8+ weeks I believe. I had an ultrasound on 3/09/2017 sac measured 15mm and beta was at 40800 and something. I had another ultrasound today 3/14/2017 and still was told the sac was empty and measured 17mm going in again on 3/22/2017 for another ultrasound. Im not sure what my beta draw from today is yet but my numbers have been doubling nicely as the doctor said she really wasnt expecting this and the last time my progesterone was checked I cant remember the exact date I believe it was within the first week of march it was 13.5 doc wasnt very concerned but gave me the option to take progesterone 200mg and I have been since 3/07/2017. I had found this site last night and it gave me some hope before todays ultrasound...im trying to stay hopefull and im praying at times even begging we have been trying for almost 4yrs. Any opinions or advice they are recommending a d and c in the next two or three weeks if I dont pass naturally before. I alreadybtold them that id like for it to happen on its own but they are worried i may get an infection in my uterus if I wait to long.

    1. I had forgot to mention this ultrasound they said that sac was shaped abnormally I seen it it is mostly round except on the left side where the other end of the circle would be it kind of looks like a triangle point.
