Diagnosed With A Miscarriage? A New Study Shows You Really Should Consider a Second Opinion

For years, we have been trying to get the word out that you should always be 100% certain before having your pregnancy ended after a miscarriage misdiagnosed.  Hundreds of misdiagnosed miscarriage stories on the The Misdiagnosed Miscarriage site as well as many more found during a quick Google search certainly make that point.

A study conducted by a Mayo researcher finds that 88% of patients seeking a second opinion end up with either a new opinion or a revised opinion.

The Value of Second Opinions Demonstrated In Study

Of course, those high numbers may be because we only seek a second opinion when we are not totally comfortable with the first opinion.  I think often there is something in us that realizes something does not quite feel right.

What does this mean for you and your diagnosed miscarriage?  If you are being pushed to end your pregnancy due to an impending miscarriage, ask yourself these questions:

  • Is there an immediate need to end the pregnancy (e.g. infection, ectopic, etc...)?
  • If you are being diagnosed with a blighted ovum, is the gestational sac more than 25mm?
  • If the sac is not yet more than 25mm, is it growing and is there a reason you can't wait a week to verify it is not still growing?
  • Are you comfortable with this doctor and this doctor's diagnosis?
If the answer to these questions is no, you may want to either discuss the wait-and-see approach or find a new doctor.  If you do decide to wait, please, stay closely monitored.  While many women go on to find those heartbeats, many women do not.  If there are any signs of complications, please be seen immediately.

  1. Hi,
I don’t know if this site is in use anymore, but I would appreciate some help.
I had a scan this morning and was told that my pregnancy is no longer viable. 6 weeks 4 days and the length is 7.2mm. There was no heart beat. According to the NHS if there is no heartbeat after 6.9mm then there is no hope.

Is this true? I am booked in for surgery on Monday...

    1. Generally, doctors will do an ultrasound one week after the baby is seen with no heartbeat. That gives everything enough time to grow. If there is still no heartbeat, you likely have your answer. (((hugs)))

  2. Hi, I went into the ER due to bleeding and I was told I was having a miscarriage. I had an u/s done and they said I was expecting a single baby but there was no heart beat. I was at about 6 weeks 4 days. I went back two days later and I was told I was expecting twins but agin no heartbeat. Then, I went back to the ER the next day because I passed a clot and I assumed it was fetal tissue. They confirmed it was fetal tissue but I am not wondering if I probably only miscarried one twin?

    1. Oh Mayra, I am so sorry you are going through this. Can you schedule an appointment to have your doctor take a look? Hopefully they can tell you what is going on. (((hugs)))

    2. Yes I am going to schedule an appointment. I've been trying to prepare myself mentally before going. I'm trying to keep my hopes up but I don't know if I'm being delusional. Thank you so much for your kind words, they mean a lot.

  3. After my personal experience this week I want to encourage everyone to get a second opinion. I was seen at the ER for left sided pain and told my HCG was 27,000 but they could only see a gestation sac measuring 5 weeks when I should have been 7 weeks. I was feeling discouraged because I had a tubal pregnancy 3 years ago and a second miscarriage that might have been a possible tubal pregnancy in August 2017. I was treated with methotrexate just in case. After those experiences I knew seeing nothing wasn't a good sign. I made an appointment with my OB/GYN 5 days later and my HCG doubled and was at 50,000! He did a transvaginal ultrasound and saw nothing. My heart sank. I was prepared to be in surgery and loose my right tube. He suggested I see the specialist next door for further ultrasound. Within 5 minutes of doing an abdominal ultrasound they found our baby, in the uterus, with a beautiful heartbeat of 164bpm. We got to hear it and everything! I measured 8 weeks exactly. It still feels unreal. I asked why there was a discrepancy and he said the quality of equipment makes a difference. I am a larger woman with a slightly tiled pelvis so that can contribute also, but I am frightened by how many people don't get a second opinion. What if I would have trusted the first exam and got methotrexate again! Or what if they sent me straight into surgery! I am so grateful for a second opinion and encourage everyone to have one. In this case I am the exception and so thankful for the miracle!

    1. (((hugs))) I am so sorry. It is still just a little early at eight weeks. The most important thing is to monitor the gestational sac until it is more than 25mm. Please, stay closely monitored.

  5. Hello my name is Rachel and I have a ministry called His Love and Care. It is very interesting as I have had the same concerned thoughts that there seem to be misdiagnosed miscarriages. Could I potentially post some of your blogs on my site?

  8. Not sure if this is checked often but i was just told that the baby stopped growing at 6 weeks and no growth a week later and no heartbeat. I would be about 10 weeks now and no bleeding according to last mentsrual period. I decided to naturally allow this but have an appt in a week with dr again. I requested my hgc levels and it came back at 130,600 and i do another test in 3 days. Im thinking of possibly getting a second opinion but also heard my levels could still rise even if baby stopped growing....
